A New Year for Your Home

The New Year is well and truly upon us, and we will all probably be making some New Year’s resolutions for 2022.

You may have resolved to live healthier, buy less or prioritise your time better. But why not set some resolutions for your home as well?

Here are some suggestions of resolutions you can make:

Resolution 1: Declutter your cupboards

We’re all guilty of having a space filled with clutter – there’s no denying it – and more often than not it’s inside a cupboard. The new year is also the perfect time to find a solution: decluttering.

Simply choose a room within your home and begin decluttering each cupboard. This is as simple as removing items you no longer need or use and ensuring that everything else has its own home. You may choose to set a goal of decluttering one room per week or month, depending on your schedule.

Resolution 2: Donate or sell what you no longer need

Once you have decluttered your cupboards, donate or sell what you no longer need. Selling items can be achieved via social media, such as Facebook Marketplace or eBay. We recommend setting any funds you earn aside for a special day out with your family.

You may even use this as an incentive to get your whole family involved. Children are notorious for having endless items they no longer need – so why not entice them this way?

Resolution 3: Clean up your filing system

Next up is your filing system. Decide on a user-friendly system that you will actually use and set to work organising paperwork and important documents.

Whether you’re using a paper or electronic system, be sure to create folders for each item and file documents accordingly. This will allow you to start the new year fresh and in control of your life.

Resolution 4: Do a deep clean

Is there a better time to commit to deep cleaning your home than New Years? We don’t think so! After the festive season, each room of your home will be in need of a clean and refresh – so be sure to fling your windows open and get to work!

While you’re at it, be sure to check your smoke alarms and electronic cords. Over time these can begin to fray which can create a fire hazard if left unattended.

Resolution 5: Create a chore chart for 2022

Resolutions are designed to help us better ourselves. When it comes to your home – consider a chore chart to ensure daily maintenance is completed and each member of your family chips in.

Chore charts can be separated into day or room and include a list of tasks that need to be completed each day. For example, a kitchen chart would include setting the table, loading the dishwasher, unloading the dishwasher, etc. You can create a chart on large poster paper or electronically and assign a family member to each item.

No matter what resolution you choose, be sure it’s something that will benefit your home life and reduce your stress.

Which of these resolutions will you take on board for 2022?
